A 10-year-old boy who was savaged by a massive bull shark off the coast of Florida had to have his entire leg amputated below the knee to survive.

Jameson Reeder Jr had been snorkelling 5 miles off the Florida Keys on Saturday (August 13) when he felt a sharp tug on his leg.

His entire family could only watch on in horror from the boat as the enormous 8-foot bull shark clamped down on the bone and began to thrash the boy around.

After a brief struggle, Jameson Jr was able to make it back to the boat but his leg was in tatters.

His distressed family managed to flag down a boat which luckily had a nurse on it to begin life-saving treatment.

But it soon became clear Jameson Jnr's life would only be saved at great cost.

A tourniquet was wrapped around his wounds to stop the bleeding at sea and he was taken to the Nicklaujs Children's Hospital in Miami by helicopter.

Documenting the traumatic incident in a Facebook post, his uncle Joshua Reeder said: "They were out on a boat snorkelling along a shallow reef when a very traumatic event occurred and my nephew Jameson jr. was attacked by what they believe to be an 8ft Bull Shark on his leg and took a crushing blow below his knee.

"They had to remove/amputate from just below the knee to save his life as it was not operable from the damage the shark had caused.

"They said the shark made the decision for him and wasn't anything they could do to save it,' Reeder's post further read. 'But his life was spared. Thank you Yeshua/Jesus!!!"

His uncle has now set up a fundraising page to raise money for the brave boy,

It reads: "Jameson is an amazingly strong young man.

"He was able to get his family's attention and hang on to a noodle float until the boat could get to him. God was watching out for him and has been in every detail. They could have lost their sweet boy, but Jameson knew Jesus was with him."
