Nerves were at an all-time high for Stu Carpenter (Bill Fellows) a few weeks ago, when he approached his daughter’s house for the first time in years.
Before we discovered Stu’s secret, we learnt he had been sending presents and cards to his daughter for years, but never received anything back.
It was due to the fact their relationship is now fractured – and we now know Stu’s time in prison was the catalyst for his happy homelife being destroyed.
When Stu came face-to-face with Bridget, he wanted to talk, but she didn’t.
Fear in her eyes, Bridget told her dad to stay well away from her and she shut the door.
Bridget and Lucy’s (Stu’s ex-wife) refusal to have anything to do with the beloved character is because they believe he murdered Charlie Walters – the woman he had an affair with some 30 years ago.
Determined to prove he is innocent, Stu is relieved when the Nazir family confirm they believe him, so he then turns his attention back to his daughter…and another new face.
‘When Stu goes to visit his daughter Bridget again, there is a beautiful moment when he finds out he is a grandad’, Bill Fellows confirms.
‘He didn’t even know he had a granddaughter. He also now wants to fight to clear his name because he does not want his granddaughter to think that he is some kind of monster. Those are the two motivations that are pushing him to clear his name and it is very important to him. He wants his daughter and granddaughter to look at him as a decent man.’
Continuing the chat, Bill reflects on the moment that saw Stu visit Bridget again, admitting his character certainly didn’t think things through at that stage, failing to consider how his life would spiral:
‘Stu has never forgotten about his daughter but actually, his biggest fear was being rejected by her and the humiliation. But it’s funny to think that if Yasmeen hadn’t found out where Bridget was, Stu wouldn’t have gone round there, and it was Stu visiting his daughter that kicked the whole thing off. It was the good deed by Yasmeen that turned out to be a horror show for Stu.’
‘Stu was fearful that it [his secret] was going to come out and, with hindsight, he should have told everyone earlier’, he adds.
‘But Stu was nervous because, what if Yasmeen didn’t believe that he was innocent? He was scared of losing Yasmeen. I do believe that Stu would have told Yasmeen abou this past eventually because he wouldn’t have been able to live with the fear that someone, somewhere, would say something.
‘I think Stu was planning to tell Yasmeen in a few months and that he was waiting for the right moment to be honest with her but unfortunately, he didn’t get to pick the moment, his ex-wife Lucy did. She told everyone before he had the chance.’
