KEVIN McCloud found himself embroiled in a heated discussion with Jon Kay as he sat down on the BBC Breakfast sofa.
Kevin appeared on the morning programme to discuss the brand new twenty third series of the Channel 4 property series, Grand Designs.
Kevin discussed how story-telling was at the heart of the show before being questioned by Breakfast host Jon Kay about making the show during the current cost of living crisis.
As Jon pointed out to Kevin that for many viewers at home the though of creating a new designer property was ‘just fantasy’, Kevin quickly snapped back stating that it isn’t the first recession the programme had filmed through.
Kevin quipped: "We learnt last time that when money goes tight people start thinking really hard.
"I don't like the idea that you spend your way out of a problem, but when people get into tight spots that is when they think in the most creative way and that's what I love."

The Grand Designs star continued. "Great ideas are often free.
"I think the other thing to say is people look at these expensive projects with amazing tech and innovative ideas and really weird designs and think, 'How can that be relevant to my life at all?'
Kevin continued to justify himself to the show’s hosts adding: "If you look at social housing, if you look at what housing associations and local authorities are doing with their housing schemes, that is where that tech goes.
"The people we are filming are the experimentalists, they have been putting their own money into a new idea which then hits the affordable sector and that is really where it matters."

Jon’s co-star Sally Nugent pressed him on how differently people had been thinking about insualting their homes and other new design features to better adapt to the current cost of living crisis and soaring energy bills.
Kevin responded: "People are building from scratch and think, 'Why should I have any energy bills when I can alter the design of my house when I am building it?'
"Where it has delayed our projects and really hurt our builders is in the way materials have gone out and steel has tripled in price, and some materials you can't even get."
As the twenty-third series of the hit Channel 4 property show returns, Kevin visits film producer Colin in Manchester to follow his and his wife’s renovation project in Manchester.
Following a series of issues with builders, Kevin told Colin that he thought the project was a write-off calling it ‘doomed’.
Home owner Colin replied: "If I made a documentary in North Korea then I can build a house."
BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One between 6am and 9:15am and Grand Design airs on Wednesdays at 9pm on Channel 4.
