A 59-year-old man has been charged on suspicion of kidnap after a child was allegedly the subject of an abduction attempt from an Aldi supermarket last weekend.

Sergejus Paskevicius, from Heywood, was remanded in custody and appeared at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court today (July 30) following the incident.

Police were called to the German-chain store in Rochdale to reports of a youngster being kidnapped.

The Sun reports that after examining CCTV from the premises in Heywood, police arrested Paskevicius on suspicion of kidnap after he was seen in the bagging area

This morning a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police revealed a man has been charged following the incident.

They said: "We’ve had charges authorised for a 59-year-old man after an initial report of an attempted abduction of a child at a store in Heywood a week ago.

"Sergejus Paskevicius, from Heywood, has been remanded in custody and will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court today (30 July) accused of child abduction after an investigation by our detectives in Rochdale CID alongside our local neighbourhood officers."

"The charge relates to an alleged incident involving a man and a child on Saturday (23 July) afternoon at Aldi on Bradshaw Street.

"We thank the public for their response and patience while we have conducted our enquires this week, and remind them not to share any information or images online that risk prejudicing this case."
